How to: Disassemble Nokia E71 Front Case

E71 dust issue?

Yang pusing, sorry ni postingan kaga pake Indonesia :) biar orang luar juga baca, liat gambarnya aja…mestinya uda ngerti, klo bingung tinggalin komen nti dibales

e71_profile1

ATTENTION!!! after getting Nokia Service Manual and read the disassemble section (level 1&2)…there is one section that mention about several parts that are not intended to be re-used after reassembly…and the screws is included…so there are 2 options…getting new screw or be careful with your current screws when you’re doing it. thx for JoniDep

After 2 month using E71, I realize that it has been sooo dirty…not only by the smudges but also dust, and apparently the dust appear inside the screen and I believe that I need to remove the casing and clean it, while I also wonder how did they get there.

4 hour ago, I browse the Internet and search any tutorial to disassemble the housing and I guess it wasn’t my luck to find it on google :)

so I try to figure it out myself and by starring at my maxwell (thatz how I call my E71  ) for about half and hour before I realize there are 4 screws that looks like tightened the front housing and the A bone(the frame)(the screws appear after you open up the battery cover and look at the left and right edges), and after knowing that the screws are perfectly fit in my T5 screwdriver then I began to work.

are you ready to work folks? okay now the requirement:

1. T5 screw driver I’m sorry for the false information, I admit I was opening my E71 front housing using T5 screw driver…however the Nokia Service Manual stated that they require T4 and T6 screw driver…therefore I suggest you to use T4 or T6 as recommended by Nokia. (T4+)

2. a plate to place all tiny materials (anything)

3. Tissue/silk/cotton/any fabric that will help you undamage the things :)

4. a nice and clean place to work ;p

5. clear tape, not soo sticky one

6. pillow  sheet maybe ;p

I’ve provide pictures so you might just need to follow the instruction.

OKAY!!! before we begin…I warn you to be EXTRA careful since you might not want to see any damage on your baby.

okay this is the plan overview, the rest? look at the picture hehehe

  1. remove the battery cover, turn your phone off surely :) remove the battery and your sim card
  2. unscrew all four and then push the metal tags till the limit, and gently pull the front cover upward toward you, plz do not rush things. (don’t do it if you have warranty seal on the screw unless you know what you are doing, I don’t have the warranty seal on the screw so I’ll be fine)
  3. now continue to push it forward to release the hook (or knob?) I provide a photo n picture, however I didn’t attach a photo that shows the process, remember to push it forward but gently coz you don’t want the hook bend all over since itz not in 180 degree face-to-face position, slightly 15-25 degree, so itz a lil bit off track.REMEMBER, FIRM and GENTLE!!!
  4. remember that above steps is needed to release the middle-top housing, not the bottom one (the one with microphone)

confuse? okay let see at the picture:

diassembly11

hey! thatz my baby maxwell hahahahha…seee? no warranty seal, so Ihave no problem to do this

plan_overview1

UPDATE—WARNING!!! According to Nokia Service Manual you should use T4+ for this steps and not T5…I’m Sorry for the inconvenience

okay now lets continue to plan 1: unscrew all four using T5 T4 and don’t forget to put the screws in a plate that you’ve been prepared

plan11

push down the metal tags, as shown in the photo and continue as you like to have it recessed from the plastic housing, let me warn you again that you are dealing with plastic and metal, in this way please push it down gently, if you are using your T5 T4 then have the tip of it covered by something soft as you may damage the plastic.

plan2

okay, good job folks…remember GENTLY!!!

result1

to have it half recessed as shown in picture use a credit card or alike, to widen the gap as, the middle-top housing is connected loosely with the bottom part (microphone part?)

unhook_the_hook

HEREZ the BIGGEY  in some case you might bend the hooks all over or not? hahaha I use everything I can to clearly describe what I mean, any question? I don’t think so, as it is not as difficult as it should be, just shoot one if you’re in trouble.

result2

TADAAA!!! hez naked now hahaha but not fully naked since hez still using his pants, well I don’t need to remove it anyway, if you want to (in case you want to change your whole front cover) the theory is just the same (I guess) hehehe, just never afraid to try.

cleaning1

okay here is my objective, to clean the LCD. Unfortunately I’ve done re-assemble all the part and forgot to take shot on how to do it back then. But, well yeah, it is as simple as cleaning anything that is ‘LCD’ hahaha but you must remember several points:

  1. Do not use a cotton fabric, I recommend using clear tape with not-so-sticky glue and round it to your finger and start lifting the dust, when the tape’s surface is full of dust use another or use the other side.
  2. If itz happen to have a finger print (from your hand of course), use  silk or specialize fabric for silver/crystal or so, then removing the dust that is left by the fabrics using point 1.

please becareful with the soft gasket at the back side of the casing, it appear arround the screen which purposely placed there to tackle all the dust. Unfortunately, this time Nokia is using a “Very”-soft sponge instead of rubber. The spone is easily damaged, this happen on me as some part of the sponge was torn in some part as it stick with my “finger”-tape. This sponge is quite important as it helps you to keep the inside screen away from dust (should be, well in my case it fails and that failure is my reason having my E71 case disassemble).

ATTENTION!!

in some case, you might want to change the keypad (in case if it break or so). Please notice the red paint area where the keypad mount to and remove it carefully.

UPDATE February 14th 2009——————————————————–

To remove the keypad simple push it down from the front. To put it again you might want to have all the knob fit in the red painted area

keypad_overview

For those you need to replace the case, Nokia sells them but with such price that could shocked you, 3rd party vendor also sells it thought (search amazon, ebay, cnn.net, etc. ).

If you think this guide useful or successfully open up your E71 using this guide please let me know by post a comment bellow :)

UPDATE!!!

Remember I didn’t responsible for the lost of your warranty, by doing this tutorial you are aware of your device warranty from Nokia. In some device you might have the seal which cover the screw, if you broke it then you’ll lost your warranty….you can re-seal the screw with new seal which can be bought on ebay, or you might want to ask nokia to seal it…just told them that you’ve just bought the device and it has no seal and you don’t want to be blammed (clear the seal from your device before doing this), I did it lot of times with all my nokia phone (11 phones so far) while I also buy the seal tape from my local repair-men (they always have it!)

FOR THOSE STUPID COMMENT, PLEASE WORK ON YOUR BRAIN BEFORE MAKING SUCH COMMENT!!!

NOKIA DEVICE ALWAYS HAVE SOME ISSUE WITH THIS, I JUST KNOW IT SINCE i HAVE 11 NOKIA PHONES SO FAR AND 4 OF THEM HAVING NO SEALING WARRANTY AT ALL…

Hi, Do you have any Idea how to remove the LCD, Mine cracked and I’m trying to change it.

    Tnx

  7. erickliemarga says:

hmmm to be honest I never tried it :) so I cant help, you might need to consult this to a mobile technician or so….try some forums like howard or ip-mart and visit the repair section.

As far as I know, the lcd replacement is quite a price ;)

  8. Scott says:

Thanks for your post. It helped me change my screen, which I bought off eBay.

Once you have gone through the steps above the screen will pop up the front (i.e. its not screwed in) it just sits in the metal frame. Then the top chips snaps out. I should have taken some pics when I did it, but was too concentrateds on making sure I didnt f- things up.

  9. erickliemarga says:

thx scott :) please mind that once you’ve done steps above…the next time you do it won’t be that difficult….no need of Credit card to widen the gap or so…it has been loosen up…but don’t worry it still in shape and you don’t have to worry about loosing your screen as you want to screw the housing again tightly but no to tight ^^ have fun

  12. erickliemarga says:

ok…this is one classic problem in almost anything that involve a screw and screwdriver…damaging the head on the screw so that you barely unable to use the screw anymore…the worst case, you might lost chances to open your device unless if you want to whack it.

as you might know that unscrewing isn’t a complicated job, indeed it’s fairly easy…however there are several basic things to follow:
    1. do not use el cheapo screwdriver…I can’t find any expensive high quality screwdriver for electronic use, so buy one.
    2. never doubt what you’re doing…all steps like…fitting your screwdriver to the screw, applying enough pressure and rotating the screw to the desired degree should be all done in one steps…
    3. do not force things until you’re sure there is no other way.
    4. do physic…momentum…if you stuck on something do not apply too much power…re-rotate your wrist as if you’re swinging your hand and apply shock rotation.

    this should do well..

first thing first…do not use el cheapo screwdriver…all you want is a precise screwdriver with high quality material

  17. erickliemarga says:

alo bos danu, sorry nih gw kaga jualan :) hehehehe, btw di nokia juga tuh, harga pasnya seperti ini:
Frame casing depan (A cover) Rp 200.000
    botom Rp 65.000
    Back case (tulang) Rp 140.000
    Battery cover Rp 185.000
    Keypad QWERTY Rp 140.000

back case itu yang tulang yah, penutup bagian kamera dan GPS chips :)

jangan kaget yah, ori sparepart memang begitu…kualitas si oke lah, tapi yang di Ebay juga lumayan soalnya denger2 1 pabrikan and a lot cheaper too so yah, sorry gw gak bisa bantu soal nyediain sparepart ^^

  18. Andy says:

    Thank you, it worked!

  19. Kdrocks says:

hmm…while this is what i’m looking for, i didn’t realize it could be a bit complicated…need to get T5 screw driver…and my hands are no surgeon hands…might ruin the screws…I’ll see if its worth paying the phone shop to to do it. I want to change the keymat.

    But neat post though! :)

    • erickliemarga says:

thx for visiting my blog…it was said that I’m using T5 screwdriver…I admit I succeed to open up my device at that time…however 2 days ago I got a copy of Nokia Service Manual with complete guide to do E71 written by Nokia for their repair-men…

unfortunately, despite my own story using T5 Screwdriver…the manual said that there are only 2 type of screwdrivers that is used…T4 and T6…and this is why I email you to recommend you using T4 for the basic opening for the front housing of your device instead of using T5.

I don’t have time to edit my page so far, and now I’m doing it. Sorry for the false information.

      Have a nice day
